Retaining its old world charm and typical rustic Italian features, it is a charming three bedroom house, built from local stone, complete with timber beam ceilings, shuttered windows and terracotta floors. Perched on the hillside overlooking the village of Strada, the Solano River and the surrounding countryside, it is a perfect private retreat and a wonderful location to delve in to the real Tuscany.
Just 55km east of Florence, it is easy driving distance to the best of Tuscany – Arezzo, Siena and the famous Chianti wine region. It is well serviced by public transport, and bus and train networks will take you to nearby Poppi or Bibbiena, or in to Florence to connect with a myriad of other locales.
Casa Castello is located in Tuscany’s Casentino forest district, in the town of Strada – the capital of the local province of Castel San Niccolo (named for the castle on the hill above the house, for which it was once the servants quarters). Famous for local boar, this is also truffle country as the shady oak and cypress trees might suggest. To eat boar these days, you will need to be adventurous, a hunter and be there in the right season, or you can try it in the local restaurants and trattoria.
Down in the valleys below, you will find some of Italy’s most famous wine – Chianti, Brunello and Montalcino – all there for the tasting.
